Justice Ginsburg Says Nine Women on Supreme Court Would Be Enough
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has a vision for a U.S. Supreme Court where women hold sway.
Ginsburg and retired Justice Sandra Day O’Connor appeared at a women’s conference in California, where they were interviewed by ABC’s Diane Sawyer, ABC News reports.
O’Connor said she attended a recent Supreme Court argument and she found that having three women justices was “dazzling.”
“How many women would be enough?” Sawyer asked.
“Nine,” Ginsburg replied, as the audience laughed and applauded. “There have been nine men there for a long, long time, right? So why not nine women?”
Ginsburg also offered some advice:
• On difficult people: “Don’t react in anger if you think you’re not being understood or you’re being put down because you’re a woman. Have a sense of humor. Know that you will not be successful in your mission if you say, ‘Oh you sexist pig.’ ”
• On her mother-in-law’s advice for a happy marriage—that it sometimes helps to be a little deaf. “That is advice that I followed not only in my marriage, but in dealing with my colleagues.”
