Jury Gets O.J. Simpson Case Today
Thirteen years to the day after he was acquitted of killing his ex-wife and her friend, O.J. Simpson saw his latest case go to a Las Vegas jury today. The jury is deliberating whether Simpson is guilty of armed robbery and kidnapping of two sports memorabilia dealers. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to life in prison.
On Thursday in their closing arguments, prosecutors said Simpson organized a gang of men at a Las Vegas casino hotel to retrieve items he lost while trying to hide them from the family of Ronald Goldman and the California court that levied a $33.5 million civil wrongful death judgment against Simpson.
Prosecutor Chris Owens said the scheme was evidence of Simpson’s arrogance, “the kind of arrogance … that would make them think they could come in and get away with this kind of crime and that nobody would report it. And they thought they could spin it that, ‘It’s all OK; It was my stuff,’” according to the Associated Press.
Simpson’s lawyer, Yale Galanter, countered that “the only thing on Mr. Simpson’s mind when he went into that room at the Palace Station was to recover his family heirlooms, his stolen property that had no value to anyone on the planet except for Mr. Simpson,” according to the Las Vegas Review Journal.
