A law clerk for a New Jersey judge has resigned from her job after taking heat over comments she made via Facebook that criticized a state trooper killed after crashing into a deer while on duty.

Disagreeing with commenters on the news site who praised the trooper as a hero, Leslie Anderson also sympathized with the dead animal, saying “I agree that it is sad and heart-wrenching for the family members left to suffer the consequences of the trooper’s recklessness—especially for the deer family who lost a mommy or daddy or baby deer.”

The Atlantic City Press, New Jersey Advance Media and News 12 New Jersey (sub. req.) have stories.

The controversial comments have been taken down, but were preserved in screenshots. The Facebook account is now closed.

Anderson was initially put on a paid suspension—described by the president of the New Jersey State Troopers Fraternal Association as a paid vacation—before resigning Wednesday, effective immediately.

President Chris Burgos also said the posts showed Anderson couldn’t be impartial, as her job requires.

The articles don’t include any comment from Anderson.
