A Colorado judge has ordered a new psychiatric exam for accused Colorado movie theater shooter James Holmes.

Judge Carlos Samour Jr. said the first exam was “incomplete and inadequate” and a new doctor should be chosen by the Colorado Mental Health Institute, report the Denver Post, CNN and the Aurora Sentinel. Prosecutors had asked the judge to allow them to choose the doctor.

Samour said in an order (PDF) unsealed Wednesday that the psychiatrist who performed the first exam collected a lot of information but “offered little rationale for some of his opinions and findings.” Holmes has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in the 2012 slayings of 12 people at a showing of the latest Batman movie.
