Judge Diane Wood in D.C., Ostensibly to Attend a Judicial Conference
Judge Diane Wood of the Chicago-based 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is in Washington, D.C., today to attend a judicial conference.
Or is she? The Legalities blog wonders if the real purpose of Wood’s visit is for an interview with Barack Obama. Wood is one of three finalists for the seat being vacated by retiring Justice David H. Souter, according to the blog’s sources.
Wood skipped teaching her first-year civil procedure class at the University of Chicago and provided no advance notice or reason for her absence, the blog says. Wood is “ostensibly” attending the judicial conference, even though she is not a panelist or participant, according to the post by ABC News legal correspondent Jan Crawford Greenburg.
Obama’s other two top picks, according to the blog’s sources, are Judge Sonia Sotomayor of the New York City-based 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and Solicitor General Elena Kagan, the former dean of Harvard Law School.
Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm was in the nation’s capital yesterday for President Barack Obama’s announcement of new auto industry fuel standards, prompting speculation about whether she was also interviewing for a possible court nomination.
