Judge brought grenade to courthouse parking lot, authorities say
A Los Angeles Superior Court judge triggered a bomb response outside the Torrance courthouse Tuesday by bringing a grenade to the parking lot, authorities said.
The unidentified jurist had found the grenade while cleaning out personal belongings of a family member who had died and brought it to the courthouse so a sheriff’s deputy could take a look at it and dispose of it, Torrance police officer Ryan Schmitz told the Los Angeles Times (sub. req.). An Associated Press story has additional details.
The deputy thought the grenade could be live, and the bomb squad was called at around 4 p.m.
The grenade was, in fact, determined to be live, the Daily Breeze reports.
The Los Angeles Times says the courthouse was not evacuated; the Associated Press says that the courthouse parking lot was evacuated.
The bomb squad took the grenade away, and no one was hurt.
