Finding that a plan by the Obama administration to expand federally funded research using human embryonic stem cells likely is prohibited by a federal law banning the use of government funds for projects that destroy embryos, a federal judge today has issued a preliminary injunction blocking the plan.

“This court is bound to apply the law as it is written.” writes Chief Judge Royce Lamberth of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia wrote in his opinion.

Articles by the Associated Press and Dow Jones Newswires provide additional details.

The plaintiff in the case, Nightlight Christian Adoptions, argued that the expanded research would reduce the number of otherwise-unneeded embryos being used by infertile couples to have a child.
