Judge allows suit against Trump University, sides with Trump on another issue
The federal judge skewered by Donald Trump as “very hostile” and a “hater of Donald Trump” is refusing to dismiss a lawsuit filed by students who were dissatisfied with Trump University’s real-estate investment course.
U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel of San Diego allowed the suit in a decision on Tuesday, but refused to make public Trump’s video depositions in a separate decision, report Politico, the Wall Street Journal (sub. req.) and the New York Times. The suit, which claims the promotion of Trump University was a racketeering enterprise, is one of two pending class actions targeting Trump University.
Curiel said transcripts of Trump’s testimony had already been released, and release of the deposition videos could “contribute to an on-going ‘media frenzy’ that would increase the difficulty of seating an impartial jury.”
Trump had criticized Curiel after the judge ordered the release of some internal Trump University documents. Curiel, Trump said, is “a very hostile judge … who happens to be, we believe, Mexican.” Curiel was born in Indiana.
