Law firms often make lateral hires in January after the books have been closed for the previous year, and 2008 is no different.

Lawyers with practices in bankruptcy and corporate finance appear particularly popular as lateral hires, the National Law Journal reports. And bankruptcy lawyers will remain in demand in 2008 because of the subprime meltdown, said Jon Lindsey, a managing partner with legal search firm Major, Lindsey & Africa.

Lindsey also expects continued lateral opportunities for intellectual property lawyers with litigation backgrounds.
