Jailed Romanian politician files request to wallpaper her jail cell
A jailed Romanian official wasn’t happy with the conditions of her confinement.
Former cabinet minister for tourism Elena Udrea filed a request to remodel her jail cell, citing its “appalling” appearance, police sources told the Mediafax news agency. The Telegraph and the Associated Press have stories.
Udrea said she would like to wallpaper her cell, paint the radiators and bars and change the furniture. She also noted that her toilet was dirty. Udrea apparently was willing to pay for the remodeling because her request was filed under a law allowing donations to state institutions, the Telegraph says.
Udrea’s lawyer, Marius Strible, confirmed that Udrea had filed a “renovation request.” The jail cell conditions were “humiliating and worthy of a concentration camp,” he said.
The request is apparently moot, however, AP says. A court ruled Tuesday that Udrea could be confined under house arrest. She was arrested last week on charges of taking bribes, influence peddling and money laundering. She has denied the charges.
