Is Orrick Considering Merger with UK Law Firm?
A British legal publication is reporting that Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe is exploring a merger with British law firm SJ Berwin.
According to the Lawyer, SJ Berwin was considering mergers with several U.S. law firms, but two of them—Goodwin Procter and Proskauer Rose—are no longer interested. A London-based recruiter told the publication there may be concerns over SJ Berwin’s “precipitous” drop in profits per equity partner.
Orrick is now the front-runner, according to the story, which relies on anonymous sources. SJ Berwin lawyers met with Orrick in New York on April 13, the article says.
Legal Pad also noted the story, cautioning that “the British press is notorious for running with the slightest of tips.” Legal Pad sought comment from an Orrick spokesman, who said the law firm doesn’t comment on rumors and speculation.
