Iraqi human rights lawyer is executed by ISIL after apostasy 'conviction' in group's court
Islamic militants executed a well-known Iraqi human rights lawyer after seizing her from her home and torturing her in an effort to get her to “repent,” a United Nations official said on Thursday.
The lawyer, Sameera Salih Ali al-Nuaimy, was seized last week after she posted Facebook comments criticizing destruction of historic sites by the militant group calling itself the Islamic State, which has also been referred to as ISIL and ISIS. The New York Times, the Washington Post and the Associated Press have stories.
UN human rights commissioner Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein said the lawyer was convicted of apostasy by the militant group’s “so-called court.” Al-Nuaimy was executed by firing squad.
