Internet Scammers Steal Major Law Firm Partners' Names
For those who may have thought the lengthy disclaimers on most law firm e-mails and websites covered virtually every contingency, there’s at least one more frontier that may offer an opportunity for further verbiage.
A major London-based law firm says Internet scammers have been plying their trade under the names of several partners, and it has posted warnings on the law firm profiles of the partners concerned that fraudulent e-mails may be using their names and have been reported to the police. Allen & Overy has also contacted the Internet service providers whose users sent the e-mails, the Lawyer says.
The scams reportedly are a somewhat more sophisticated version of classic e-mail frauds soliciting funds needed to obtain a much larger sum, in which the victim is offered a share that, of course, will never be received.
“They send emails from [email protected] or something to people saying, you’ve been named in a will to Joe Bloggs, give us your bank account details,” a firm spokesman explains to the legal publication.
