Indianapolis Court Targets No-Show Jurors
Seventeen no-show jurors in Indianapolis are getting a surprise from the Marion County Superior Court: warrants for their arrest.
Judge Mark Stoner has been coordinating a crackdown on no-show jurors, and his court issued the arrest warrants for contempt of court, the Indianapolis Star reports. About half of people summoned for jury duty in the county do not show up.
Nine of those receiving warrants ignored a summons to a mass court hearing for people who failed to show up for jury duty for one week in October. The other eight people went to the hearing, but didn’t appear for jury duty when they got a new jury assignment.
Court administrator Glenn Lawrence said courts cannot function if potential jurors ignore their responsibility.
“We’re talking about taxpayers’ money and the inconvenience of people who do show up. It bogs down the system,” he told the Star.
