If confirmed, Merrick Garland might be the wealthiest Supreme Court justice
Judge Merrick Garland.
U.S. Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland is worth at least $7.6 million and possibly as much as $25 million, which might make him the wealthiest justice if he were confirmed to the court.
Among the current justices, the wealthiest is Stephen G. Breyer, who is worth between $6.1 million and $16 million, according to an analysis of financial disclosure forms by the Center for Public Integrity. Next most wealthy is Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., with a net worth of at least $4.2 million.
Breyer and Roberts are among six justices who are worth more than $1 million. Two others—Clarence Thomas and Anthony M. Kennedy—estimate their minimum net worth at about $600,000 and their maximum net worth as high as $1.2 million. Fix the Court has posted the forms here.
The disclosure forms show Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. or his wife has sold stock in Exxon Mobil Corp. valued at $100,000 to $250,000, Bloomberg News and Reuters report. Alito had recused himself in cases involving the company, including a 2008 case cutting punitive damages in the Exxon Valdez oil spill.
Two justices received unusual gifts. Clarence Thomas received a bronze bust of abolitionist Frederick Douglass from Dallas hotel owner Harlan Crow that was valued at about $6,500. Elena Kagan received a signed copy of a book by Justice Felix Frankfurter from the University of Chicago Law School.
