How Cynthia Jackson Got a Life
Cynthia Jackson thought she was helping her law firm by keeping her nose to the grindstone. But then the Baker & McKenzie employment partner went to an out-of-office workshop and had a revelation.
The firm wanted her to have a life as well as a law practice, Jackson realized. So she began focusing on herself as well as the firm, billing perhaps 1,900 hours annually but also making time to take better care of herself, her husband and her 17-year-old daughter, reports the Recorder, in an article reprinted by New York Lawyer (reg. req.).
Today she eats well, has a regular exercise program, and can take some time out of a busy day to attend her daughter’s soccer game, for instance.
“I’m finding that I’m making time,” she says. “It requires discipline. Just as I have to apply discipline to client matters, the same goes for myself and my family.”
According to the article, Baker is among a growing number of firms taking advantage of the executive workshop offered by the Center for Creative Leadership, which customizes work for law firms.
