Home Depot confirmed Monday that the store had suffered a data breach that could affect customers who used a debit card or a credit card at some 2,200 stores in the U.S. and Canada.

The company said its payment systems had been hacked possibly as far back as April, but insisted that PIN numbers for debit cards had not been compromised, according to the Associated Press, the Dallas Morning News and the Wall Street Journal (sub. req.).

The company also didn’t confirm claims that the malware used in the Home Depot hack was a reconfigured version of the software deployed in an earlier attack on Target.

Customers will be reimbursed for any fraudulent charges, Home Depot says, and the company also is offering free credit monitoring and identity-protection services to those affected.

Earlier Associated Press and Reuters stories provide additional details.
