Holland & Knight associate to perform at SXSW
Holland & Knight associate Andrew Choi hasn’t settled on just one career path.
He is a Julliard-trained violinist who decided not to pursue a classical music career because of the industry decline, Bloomberg Big Law Business reports. He went to graduate school in philosophy, but decided against pursuing an academic career as he saw the job market drying up. He went to law school at New York University and landed a job at Holland & Knight.
But Choi didn’t give up on music. While he was in graduate school at Ohio State he started singing karaoke and began writing music. He started his own group, called St. Lenox, and it will perform on Thursday in a showcase at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas.
Bloomberg describes the band as “an indie pop outfit that’s released two albums and received rave reviews from NPR, New York Magazine and Vice’s Noisey music blog.” The first album was released after he began work at Holland & Knight.
The group name came from a train stop, the 148th St.-Lenox terminal, something Choi used to see on his NYU law school commute. “I think it was the idea of reading something meaningful into something mundane,” he said of the name. “It happened to fit what my aesthetic is, for lack of a better word.”
Bloomberg asked Choi if he would give up his legal career if his band took off. “The chances of me becoming a super successful famous musician are not fantastic,” he answered. “That said, who knows.”
