GOP Fundraiser Drops Ohio Voter Registration Suit
A Republican fundraiser has dropped a lawsuit against Ohio election officials that had sought verification of new voter registrations that didn’t match government databases.
The suit was one of two that had sought verification of some 200,000 new registrations that had prompted complaints by Democrats that the GOP was trying to disenfranchise voters, report the Cleveland Plain Dealer and the Associated Press. The other suit, filed by the Republican Party, failed last week when the U.S. Supreme Court vacated a temporary restraining order on the ground the party likely lacked standing to pursue the case.
Ohio Republican chairman Bob Bennett said in a statement that the party had asked fundraiser David Myhal to drop the case. “We didn’t file this lawsuit, but I’ve asked that it be withdrawn in the interest of negotiating a solution out of court,” Bettett said. “The legal wrangling on this issue has gone on long enough.”
