Internet and broadband companies are monitoring the Web surfing habits of their users via targeted-ad technology, letters released by the House Energy and Commerce Committee reveal.

The companies are doing so without explicitly informing their customers, the Washington Post reports.

Leading online advertiser Google acknowledged that it’s now following Web-surfers across affiliated sites.

The released letters are in response to a bipartisan examination of how major Internet companies gather data to target customers, the Post reports.

Privacy advocates are hoping such revelations will lead to a push for a broad online-privacy Bill of Rights. Among the provisions would be that customers must opt-in before being tracked.
