Funeral Home Eviction Issue: What to Do With the Bodies?
A recent eviction at a business in Pontiac, Mich., posed some unusual issues for officials responsible for emptying the premises.
That’s because the business was a funeral home, and among the items that had to be removed were five bodies and the cremated remains of 22 others, reports the Detroit Free Press.
The problem was at least partially solved with the help of the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s office, which is storing all of the bodies and cremated remains, the newspaper writes.
“By midday, one body had been claimed by family members and shipped to another funeral home. Medical examiner staffers were trying to determine next of kin for the other remains.”
However, members of the impoverished community served by the funeral home for three decades were outraged about the situation, saying that it showed disrespect for the dead, the newspaper reports in a previous article.
It’s not clear whether those who have paid for one funeral that hasn’t yet occurred may now have to pay for another.
