Former Pepper Hamilton chairman Jon Baughman died Monday at the age of 72.

The cause of death was dementia, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Baughman took over as chairman of Pepper Hamilton’s executive committee in 1992 after its former chairman, John Harkins, left with several other lawyers, the Inquirer says. Baughman added lawyers to the firm and increased revenues. His role as chairman ended in 1994.

He also chaired the litigation and intellectual property departments at the law firm. His role as a mentor was also noted in a press release, report the Legal Intelligencer and the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Baughman started as an associate at Pepper Hamilton in 1967 and retired from the firm in 2007. He left the law firm between 1968 and 1972 for a stint in the Army as a captain in the Judge Advocate General Corps.
