A New York lawyer who until recently was earning nearly $1 million a year as a BigLaw partner has taken a felony tax fraud plea.

Court filings say Jeff Galloway, a former partner at Hughes Hubbard & Reed, didn’t file New York state personal income tax forms or pay tax between 2005 and 2010, the Wall Street Journal’s Metropolis blog reports.

When contacted by investigators in April 2012, Galloway claimed he had filed the returns but with a typographical error in his social security number. The amended returns he then filed listed excessive deductions, the Manhattan district attorney’s office contends.

The article doesn’t include any comment from Galloway, 61, or his legal counsel. His sentencing is scheduled for next month.

Above the Law reports that the firm announced the then-expected plea in an internal email earlier today. The email noted that Galloway had resigned earlier this month and said the criminal case was a personal matter that had nothing to do with his work at the law firm.
