Fear of the swine flu has changed rituals at schools, churches and the workplace—including at least one law firm.

“What used to be OK is not anymore, as the flu has ushered in new standards of etiquette that can be, in turns, mundane, absurd and heartbreaking,” the New York Times reports.

The Boston-based law firm Foley Hoag has passed out flu survival kits with hand sanitizer and anti-bacterial wipes, the story says. The firm is also setting up home offices in case flu becomes widespread.

“We wanted to really get ahead of this and be preventive so we can maintain client services,” Tom Block, the chief operating officer, told the Times.

Flu fears led to the dismissal of a juror in the trial of a man convicted in the killings of seven people at a Brown’s Chicken restaurant in suburban Chicago. The juror’s wife and child were home sick, and he was replaced with an alternate, according to the Times.

Fears aren’t limited to the legal arena. Students were warned to avoid the communal drinking game beer pong at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., the story says. In churches, some parishioners have been advised to avoid shaking hands, and some pastors are carrying hand sanitizer.
