Fla. Lawyer Barred From Offering Debt Relief Services
South Florida lawyer Laura Hess has been permanently banned from offering to help consumers with debt problems.
Hess and her Hess Kennedy Law Firm are alleged to have stolen millions of dollars in direct deposits from clients who believed Hess was paying their creditors, Miami’s NBC 6 reports.
But thousands of the victims were told this week that some of the banks, including Capital One, had decided to forgive the debts of many of Hess’ clients. NBC 6 reports that Capital One is erasing debts for 18,000 customers who used Hess and her firm to pay their bills.
Also on Tuesday, a Broward County judge announced that, as part of a consent agreement with the Florida Attorney General’s Office, Hess is barred from doing any more business related to debt consolidation. Hess’ law license has been suspended, the Foster Folly News reports.
