Law enforcement officials in the small Florida town of Cocoa are cracking down on a little-known law that bans the wearing of masks in public.

The enforcement comes on the heels of numerous robberies in Florida in which individuals wearing gorilla and Scream masks have held up businesses. The most recent was a convenience store robbed Saturday in Orange City, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

The Orange-Osceola State’s Attorney’s Office had an ominous Halloween warning from the office’s executive director, Randy Means, who noted that firearms are more prevalent now and cashiers and hotel clerks may be arming themselves.

“If they see two guys inside [the store] with a mask and they fear for themselves, the 16-year-old goofing around with a mask could be dead,” Means is quoted saying.
