Federal judge requires Quinn Emanuel to prove claim about dropped witness

A federal judge in California told Quinn Emanuel lawyers on Thursday that she wanted proof of their claim about a dropped witness who had been scheduled to testify for Samsung in a patent infringement case.
U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh of San Jose made her demand after Quinn Emanuel lawyer Victoria Maroulis had said that at least one witness was dropped because he had left town, Law360 reports. Koh told the lawyer she wanted the boarding pass for the witness and a receipt showing when he had purchased the ticket.
“We can play these games if you think it is necessary for your case, which I guess you think you do,” Koh said. “But it’s unfortunate.”
Maroulis had denied playing games. She said the witnesses couldn’t wait to testify after other Samsung witnesses spent more time testifying than expected.
The trial is being held to determine how much Samsung must pay Apple for patent infringement. Witnesses for Apple testified Samsung should pay more than $1 billion for infringement of three design patents and more than $5 million for infringing two utility patents.
