Fatal police shooting of rock thrower spurs multiple probes
The fatal police shooting of a Mexican immigrant who had been throwing rocks at officers has spurred protest and multiple inquiries.
Police in Pasco, Washington, shot and killed orchard worker Antonio Zambrano-Montes, 35, last Tuesday in an incident recorded on cellphone video, the New York Times reports. He had no knife or gun when killed. It was the third slaying by Pasco police since July.
The video shows Zambrano-Montes running from the officers before he turns and swings his arms up.There is gunfire, and Zambrano-Montes falls to the ground. Officers had previously ordered him to surrender and had fired a Taser at him.
Inquiries are under way by a task force of police agencies and the FBI. The county coroner has promised an inquest, according to the Times and the Associated Press. About 500 people protested the killing on Saturday, according to a separate story by the New York Times.
Meanwhile, the family of Zambrano-Montes has filed a claim with Pasco seeking $25 million in damages.
