Former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman has long maintained that his prosecution was politically motivated. Now he’s getting support from 44 former state attorneys general who are asking Congress to investigate.

The group sent a letter to the House and Senate judiciary committees on Friday urging a probe of the Justice Department prosecution, the Los Angeles Times reports. “The only way to convince the public that the governor is not the victim of a politically motivated double standard is for Congress to investigate all aspects of the case thoroughly,” the letter said.

Siegelman, also a former attorney general, was convicted last year of bribery and obstruction of justice.
