The chief aide to Detroit’s disgraced ex-mayor has opted to avoid a jury trial and pleaded guilty today to obstruction of justice.

Christine Beatty agreed to serve a four-month sentence for her role in the text-message sex scandal involving then-Mayor Kwame M. Kilpatrick, the New York Times reports.

The paper notes that the plea deal is similar to the one that prosecutors reached with Kilpatrick in September.

Both are to serve five years of probation and pay restitution to the city. And while Kilpatrick lost his law license, Beatty will be barred from continuing to seek a law degree while on probation.

Beatty admitted during her plea that she lied under oath when she denied ever having a sexual relationship and denying that she and Kilpatrick fired two police officers for fear they would expose the affair.
