Ex-Law Firm COO Set to Enter Guilty Plea in Ponzi Case
The former chief operating officer for the law firm of Ponzi schemer Scott Rothstein is set to enter a guilty plea.
Former COO Debra Villegas has reached a plea deal, a prosececutor told the judge Thursday, the Daily Business Review reports. Villegas was charged in April with conspiracy to commit money laundering in the $1.2 billion Ponzi scheme operated by Rothstein at the now-defunct law firm Rothstein Rosenfeldt Adler.
Villegas is accused of helping Rothstein fabricate and market bogus litigation settlements to investors.
The plea deal was expected, the Daily Business Review says. Villegas’ lawyer, Robert Stickney, has said she is cooperating with authorities.
