Updated: A controversial Nevada judge who has been suspended from the bench is in the hospital with a severe head injury, and her husband has been charged with attempted murder after an incident at their Las Vegas home last night.

Edward Halverson, 49, who has a lengthy criminal record, is accused of beating Elizabeth Halverson, his wife of nine years with a frying pan, reports KVBC, an NBC affiliate. He has been charged with felony attempted murder, battery with a deadly weapon and battery with substantial bodily harm.

“The 50 year-old judge called 911 late Thursday night, she said she needed help because her husband was going to beat her to death,” the station recounts in an article on its website. “Officers forced their way into the house and found Elizabeth Halverson in the bedroom; her upper body was covered in blood.”

The Las Vegas Review-Journal says in an article this morning that the judge’s injuries are not life-threatening. An Associated Press article late this afternoon says that the judge is in an intensive care unit, following surgery.
