Comedian Eddie Murphy, 46, and his wife of two weeks, film producer Tracey Edmonds, 40, have decided to call it quits. However, they don’t need a divorce.

Because they were married Jan. 1 on a private island near Bora Bora, and U.S. law requires a wedding on American soil to make a marriage legal, the two are simply announcing their amicable split rather than filing for divorce, explains Reuters. Apparently, they had intended to remarry in the U.S. to ratify the foreign ceremony, but have now changed their minds.

“After much consideration and discussion, we have jointly decided that we will forgo having a legal ceremony as it is not necessary to define our relationship further,” the couple say in a written statement, as reported by the news agency. “While the recent symbolic union in Bora Bora was representative of our deep love, friendship and respect that we have for one another on a spiritual level, we have decided to remain friends.”
