North Carolina’s attorney general says the original prosecutor in the Duke University sexual assault case could face a criminal investigation.

“We believe that these cases were the result of a tragic rush to accuse and a failure to verify serious allegations,” says state Attorney General Roy Cooper, quoted in a Washington Post story. “There were many points in this case where caution would have served justice better than bravado.”

Cooper’s comments came as he announced that sexual assault charges were being dropped against three lacrosse players. Our original blog post on the announcement is here.

The prosecutor, Durham District Attorney Michael B. Nifong, is already facing an ethics investigation. Nifong’s lawyer told ABC News that his client pushed the case because he believed in it.
