It’s a question plaguing lawyers throughout the nation: What is permissible swimwear at law firm poolside outings?

The Careerist consulted the jobs website FINS and an unnamed BigLaw partner for answers.

Etiquette expert Barbara Pachter told FINS that men and women should choose bathing suits that “don’t overemphasize any body parts.” The BigLaw partner said she would “question the wisdom of wearing a bikini in a business social context—no matter how young or fit one may be.” She suggested instead “a modest racing suit and a cover-up right to the water’s edge.”

An unidentified Los Angeles entertainment lawyer didn’t see the need for modesty, however. “If you look good, go for it; if not, cover up,” she advised the Careerist.
