DLA Piper Lays Off 21 Associates, 100 Staffers
DLA Piper will lay off 21 associates and 100 staffers in a second round of cuts at the firm’s U.S. offices this year.
A memo distributed today announced the layoffs. “During the last year, we have experienced the worst economic period in generations,” said the memo provided to the ABA Journal. “Unfortunately, economic weakness has continued, demand across the legal sector remains soft, and it is increasingly clear that major improvements in the U.S. and global economy will not occur before 2010.”
The memo says the firm’s economic picture remains strong, but the soft economy requires a second round of layoffs. In February, the firm cut about 80 associates and 100 staffers, part of a wave of layoffs announced that month by major law firms. The firm also laid off 30 people in its Middle East offices and 124 people in its U.K. offices earlier this year.
Above the Law and the National Law Journal also carried the news of today’s layoffs.
