Digital Data Privacy Bill Introduced in Senate by Kerry and McCain
Senators yesterday introduced a bill that requires companies that traffic personal data to get permission before sharing the information with third-party groups.
According to technology blog Hillicon Valley, the bill also requires firms to have security measures protecting collected data, and companies must clearly state how they gather and use personal information.
The bill also calls for an opt-out option, but does not include a “Do Not Track” list called for by consumer advocates.
John Kerry (D-Mass.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) introduced the bill (PDF), known as the Commercial Privacy Bill of Rights Act of 2011. Kerry stated to reporters that he was open to discussion about including a Do Not Track amendment, but that including it initially may have upset the support balance between businesses and consumer advocates.
