Detainee Makes Torture Claim
Transcripts of a military hearing for a Guantanamo detainee released yesterday reveal his claims of torture.
Abu Zubaydah said he made false statements in an effort to stop the abuse, the New York Times reports. His reply to a question seeking specifics was removed from the transcript.
Zubaydah said he was active in jihadist causes, but disagreed with some terrorist actions. “I disagreed with the al-Qaida philosophy of targeting innocent civilians like those in the World Trade Center,” he said in the March 27 hearing.
The United States claims Zubaydah helped run a terrorist training camp and forged travel documents for al-Qaida.
A CIA spokesman told the newspaper the United States “does not conduct or condone torture.”
