Self-identified lawyers are favoring Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis over former President Trump in campaign donations.
According to Bloomberg Law, lawyers gave more than $1.3 million in individual contributions to DeSantis through the end of June but only $200,000 to Trump. President Joe Biden is faring somewhat better, with $1.5 million in contributions from individual lawyers.
The law firm whose lawyers contributed the most to DeSantis is Sullivan & Cromwell, with $129,300 in contributions. Its co-chair, Robert Giuffra, gave the maximum allowed for individuals—$6,600.
The article noted that DeSantis is a graduate of Harvard Law School, where he was a member of the Federalist Society.
“To the extent that attorneys are looking for an alternative on the Republican side, it’s no surprise to see them coalescing around DeSantis,” said Derek Muller, a professor at the Notre Dame Law School, in an interview with Bloomberg Law. “He’s the sitting governor of the third-largest state and was reelected by a wide margin.”
A firm partner who spoke with Bloomberg Law on condition of anonymity offered another reason.
“The thinking among a lot of Republican lawyers is that DeSantis is the best shot at Trump not being the nominee,” the partner said.
