Reading a balance sheet and learning to create databases and computer spreadsheets aren’t the focus of a law-school education.

But such useful skills, routinely taught to business school students, will be the focus of an innovative monthlong training program for incoming first-year associates at least two major law firms, according to the Wall Street Journal Law Blog.

At Debevoise & Plimpton, new associates in the firm’s New York and London office will spend their first month working full-time on a program developed by Fullbridge, a new company owned by two Harvard Business School grads. It combines online training, coaching and group activities.

A similar program will be offered to the 100 new associates at Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom, which began working with Fullbridge to train its new associates in business skills in January.
