Dallas trial lawyer Fred Baron says he paid John Edwards’ mistress to leave North Carolina so she could stop being hounded by the tabloids.

Baron was the chairman of Edwards’ presidential campaign finance committee, but he said he used his own money to finance the move, the Dallas Morning News reports. He said Edwards did not know about the payments to Rielle Hunter, a novice filmmaker.

The Dallas Morning News account does not mention the amount Baron has paid. A Fox News story says Baron is paying Hunter a reported $15,000 a month even though the affair was supposed to have ended in late 2006.

Edwards’ political action committee paid Hunter $114,000 in 2006 and early 2007 to produce four Web videos about his day-to-day activities as he was preparing to run for president.

Edwards has admitted the affair but says he is not the father of the woman’s child.

Baron founded the law firm of Baron & Budd, but left the firm several years ago.
