Websites of government agencies, including those responsible for fighting cyber crime, were targeted in a cyber attack that began on July 4.

South Korean lawmakers told news agencies that North Korea may have been behind the attacks, the Washington Post reports. The Post’s website was also targeted, along with those operated by Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange.

The Post and the Associated Press report that targeted agencies included the departments of Homeland Security, Defense, Transportation and Treasury; the Secret Service; the Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Aviation Administration. Websites in South Korea were also hit.

The cyber attackers used software to bombard and overload the websites. Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Amy Kudwa told the Post that the cyber attackers did not steal any data, and measures already in place minimized the impact.

AP says several government websites experienced some temporary outages over the holiday weekend because of the attacks.
