Cuba Blasts Exile’s Victory
A judge’s decision yesterday to dismiss the indictment against Cuban exile Luis Posada Carriles took both sides by surprise and prompted both condemnation and jubilance.
Cuba’s top diplomat in Washington labeled Posada “the bin Laden of this hemisphere” and said the administration was doing all it could to protect him, the New York Times reports. Venezuela’s foreign minister repeated demands that Posada be tried for the 1976 bombing of a Cuban jetliner.
The indictment had charged Posada with immigration fraud. U.S. District Judge Kathleen Cardone of El Paso said the government used “fraud, deceit and trickery” during an interview with Posada to get evidence for the indictment.
