Cops Issue Hip-Hop Violence Warning
Police in Colorado Springs are warning of a link between violence and hip-hop music.
Police point to three recent shootings that occurred in fights that spilled out onto the streets after nightclub altercations and a concert at a park, the New York Times reports. A recent press release issued by the department warns the music is cause for concern.
“We don’t want to broad-brush hip-hop music altogether,” police spokesman Lt. Skip Arms told the Times, “but we’re looking at a subcomponent that typically glorifies, promotes criminal behavior and demeans women.”
Critics say the blame is misplaced.
“When two cowboys got into an argument at a saloon, went outside and had a draw, nobody blamed the music that was playing at the saloon,” said local rapper B. Serious.
