Conyers Calls For AG to Open Probe of Claimed Bush Admin Abuses
The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee today called for U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to appoint a special counsel to probe potential abuses of power under the Bush administration.
In a speech to the National Press Club, Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) said Holder “must appoint a special counsel to review the Bush administration abuses of power and misconduct. A criminal probe—he’s got to do that,” reports the Associated Press.
Although Holder is currently considering whether to open an investigation into interrogation methods used on terrorism suspects, the news agency notes, the committee has also sought a broader investigation focusing on additional issues such as warrantless intelligence-gathering and mistreatment of critics.
The alleged firing of at least nine U.S. attorneys for political reasons would also be a likely focus of such a probe, reports the Detroit Free Press.
