Fla. City Manager Fired Over Sex Change Gets New Job--and a Pay Raise
A little over two years ago, when it became public that a longtime city manager in Largo, Fla., planned to undergo a sex change, he was immediately fired from his $140,000-a-year job.
A number of people supported ousting him, but others said the incident could be a wake-up call for Congress to enact federal legislation to protect others from such discrimination, as the Associated Press reported at the time.
Now the story is concluding with a happier ending for the former Steve Stanton, who is known today as Susan Stanton. She is about to start a new $150,000-a-year job as city manager for Lake Worth, Fla., reports the Miami Herald. Her compensation reportedly will include a $500-per-month car allowance, too.
The firing in Largo also helped the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council to persuade three South Florida cities, including Lake Worth, as well as Palm Beach County to pass ordinances banning discrimination based on gender identity, the newspaper notes.
