People who roll their eyes will be safe from ejection from city council meetings in the Chicago suburb of Elmhurst.

A proposed revision of the municipal code clarifies the kind of disorderly conduct that can lead to ouster, and nonverbal action—including eye rolling—isn’t on the list of banned conduct, according to the Chicago Tribune and MySuburbanLife.com.

A woman had been ejected from a June meeting of the Elmhurst city council after she rolled her eyes and pretended to yawn, prompting Ald. Mark Mulliner to leave the meeting in protest. Mulliner said he never intended for eye-rolling to be banned when he asked for a revision of the municipal code a month later, the stories report.

“I want to make sure the public understands this is not in any way intended to expel people for eye-rolling,” Mulliner said. “It got out there and it snowballed and comedians loved it.”
