Chicago Cop Charged in Alleged Gang Plot to Kill Former Cop
A Chicago police officer has been arrested by federal authorities in an alleged plot to murder a former officer expected to testify against him in a police corruption case.
Officer Jerome Finnigan was arrested at home this morning and charged with planning to hire a street gang member to murder a former Chicago police officer who is a potential witness in an ongoing investigation of the department’s special operations section, reports the Chicago Tribune. A court hearing is planned this afternoon, the newspaper says.
“Finnigan already faces state charges alleging that he and six other SOS officers robbed and kidnapped people over several years while they were supposed to be combating gang and drug crime in the city’s toughest neighborhoods,” the article states. Federal and state prosecutors also reportedly are investigating why the city police internal affairs division, which the newspaper says was “aware of the allegations against Finnigan and several other officers for at least four years,” didn’t take action.
Finnigan’s lawyer could not be reached for comment.
