Former U.S. congressman, longtime Stanford University law professor, economics professor and business dean Tom Campbell is the new dean of Chapman University School of Law in Orange, Calif., the school announced today.

Campbell, 58, had been a visiting teacher at Chapman since 2009, after taking leave from the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley, from which he stepped down as dean in 2008. The Orange County Register says he moved south to Orange County in 2009 to increase his statewide political base and run for governor the following year. He had served five terms in the U.S. Congress.

After having filed for the governor bid, Campbell suddenly ran instead for the U.S. Senate. He lost in the 2010 Republican primary to Carly Fiorina, who in turn failed to unseat the incumbent, Democrat Barbara Boxer. It was Campbell’s third go at the Senate.
