Caroline Kennedy Wants Hilary Clinton's Senate Seat
After a lifetime of avoiding the spotlight, the sole surviving child of former President John F. Kennedy has decided to cast her hat into the political ring in which her family has been so prominent.
Caroline Kennedy, 51, a 1988 graduate of Columbia Law School, has decided to seek the U.S. Senate seat to be vacated by Sen. Hilary Clinton (D-N.Y.) when she becomes U.S. Secretary of State in the administration of President-elect Barack Obama, reports the New York Times.
If she is appointed by Gov. David Paterson, she would follow in the footsteps not only of her father but of two uncles: Robert F. Kennedy and Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.), all of whom served in the Senate.
She is among a dozen candidates seeking Clinton’s soon-to-be-vacated seat, which was at one time held by Robert F. Kennedy, reports CNN.
“Paterson has the power to appoint a replacement, who will then face a special election in 2010 to fill out Clinton’s term,” the news agency notes.
Kennedy had stayed out of the political spotlight until Obama’s campaign for president, in which she was an active participant.
